Anterior (ventral)

at or towards the front
Posterior (dorsal)

at or towards the back
Superior (cranial)

at or closer to the head (supra-)
Inferior (caudal)

at or closer to the feet (infra-)
Medial

at or closer to the midsagittal plane
Lateral

further away from the midsagittal plane
Proximal

closer to the origin of a structure or to the root of limb
Distal

further from the origin of a structure or to the root of limb
Superficial (external)

closer to or on the surface of the body
Deep (internal)

further from the surface of the body
Frontal (coronal) Plane
- a section parallel to the long axis of the body
- divides the body into anterior and posterior portions
- these "cuts" are referred to as frontal or coronal sections
Transverse (horizontal) Plane
- lies at right angles (perpendicular) to the long axis of the body
- divides the body into superior and inferior portions
- these "cuts" are referred to as transverse (cross) sections
Sagittal (median) Plane
- a section parallel to the long axis of the body
- divides the body into right and left portions
- Midsagittal plane extends directly through the midline
- Parasagittal plane extends parallel the midline
