How do the non-polar AA interact with each other?
The are hydrophobic so they agregate in the center with the R groups facing outwardly-
This is called hydrphobic effect
Hydrogen bonding
Name the nine non-polar amino acids.
Which are the unique two and why?
Glycine
Alanine
Isoluecine
Luecine
Valine
Triptophan
Proline
Methionine
Two weird ones are methionine and tryptophan bc they have electronegative atoms
What are the primary functions of proteins? (6)
Structural
Signaling
Enzymatic catalysis
Transport
Gene regulation
Protection
Name the uncharged polar amino acids.
Serine
Asparagine
Glutamine
Tyrosine
Threonine
Cysteine
What kind of interactions do polar, uncharged amino acids have?
Hydrogen bonding
Disulfide bonds between cysteines only, but cysteines can also still hydrogen bond (hydrogen bonds are weaker than covalent disulfide bonds)
What are the amino acids with charged polar R-groups?
How do they interact?
Hydrogen bonding
Ionic bonds- negatively charged acids will bond with positively charged R groups
Glutamic acid -
Aspartic acid -
Arginine +
Lysine +
Histidine kind of neutral to semi positive
