MAOI-inhibit MAO (enzyme found in nerves and other tissues) to breakdown NE, Dopamine, 5HT. No Tyramine Foods-aged cheese, aged meats, brewers yeast, fava beans, red wines, Smoked or pickled meats(may cause MAOI to be toxic).Increase NE=Increase heart. Increase Dopamine= Increase BP. Increase in BP and vasoconstriction r/t increased NE levels could cause stroke. Potential for fatal hypertensive crisis.

Tricyclic Antidepressants-decreases reuptake of NE and 5HT. TCA's with MAOI can cause hyperpyretic crisis-convulsions, hypertensive crisis and death. May interact with dyes. Not with MI hx. Anticholinergic-SLUD. Many side effects. Abrupt cessation can cause nausea HA vertigo malaise nightmares blurred vision tachycardia

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors(SSRI). Block reuptake of 5HT. 4 weeks of treatment for full therapeutic effect. Risk of suicide in children and adolescents. Risk for respiratory infections
