States of matter

  1. Matter-
    anything that takes up space and has mass.
  2. Solid-
    matter with definete shape and volume.
  3. Liquid-
    matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape.
  4. Viscosity-
    liquids resistance to flow.
  5. Surface Tension-
    the uneven forces acting on the particles on the surface of a liquid.
  6. Gas-
    matter that does not have definite shape of volume.
  7. Thermal Energy-
    total kinetic and potentioal energy of all the particles in a sample of matter.
  8. Temperature-
    the average kinetic energy of the individual particles.
  9. Heat-
    the movement of thermal energy form a substance at a higher temperature to one at a lower temperature.
  10. Melting-
    the change from the solid state to the liquid state.
  11. Freezing-
    change form the liquid state to the solid state.
  12. Vaporization-
    The change from a liquid to a gas.
  13. Condesation-
    change from a gas to a liquid.
  14. Pressure-
    equal to the force excerted on a surface divided by the toatal area over which the force is excerted.
  15. Buoyant Force-
    difference in pressure resulting in a upward forec on a object immersed in fluid.
  16. Archimedes' Principle-
    the buoyant force on am object is equal to the weight of the dulid displaced by the object.
  17. Density-
    mass divided by volume.
  18. Pascal's Principle-
    when a force is applied to a confined fluid, and increase in pressure is transmitted equally to all parts of the fluid.
