"In All Probability" Vocabulary

  1. Events for which the occurrence of one has no impact on the occurrence of the other.
    Independent Events-
  2. All possible outcomes of a given experiment.
    Sample Space-
  3. A subset of a sample space.
    Event-
  4. An event consisting of just one outcome. A simple event can be represented by a single branch of a tree diagram.
    Simple Event-
  5. A sequence of simple events.
    Compound Events-
  6. The complement of event E, sometimes denoted E' (E prime), occures when E doesn't. The probabbility of E' equals 1 minus the probability of E: P(E')= 1 - P (E).
    Compement-
  7. If an event A can occure in m ways and for each of these m ways, and event B can occure in n ways, then events A and B can occure in m* n ways. This counting principle can be generalized to more than two event that happen in succession. So, if for each of the m and n ways A and B can occur repectively, there is also an event C that con occur in s ways, then events A, B, and C can in m*n*s ways.
