    the breakdown of complex molecules into simple molecules during metabolism
  3. ectopic
    away from the normal position, displaced
  4. endemic
    a disease that is always present in a specific region
  5. gluconeogenesis
    the production of glucose from protein or fat
  6. glucosuria
    glucose in the urine
  7. hyperglycemia
    high blood sugar, is a condition in which an excessive amount of glucose circulates in the blood plasma
  8. hypoglycemia
    low blood glucose, effects can range from mild dysphoria to seizures, unconsciousness, permanent brain damage, or death
  9. iatrogenic
    caused by a treatment, procedure, or error
  10. ketoacidosis
    high concentrations of ketone bodies, formed by the breakdown of fatty acids and the damination of amino acids. Common in untreated type 1 DM, when the liver breaks down fat and proteins in response to a perceived need for respiratory substrate. Prolonged alcoholism can be a cause. It can be smelled on breath due to acetone.

    occurs when the output of a system acts to oppose changes to the input of the system, with the result that the changes are attenuated. Makes system stable
  16. neuropathy
    degeneration of nerve fibers
  17. polydipsia
    excessive thirst
  18. polyphagia
    eating too much
  19. polyuria
    abnormally large volume of urine excreted within a given time period
  20. Tropic hormones
    hormones that have other endocrine glands as their target.
