Flumazenil (Romazicon)

  2. Description
    It is used to reverse the sedative effect of benzodiazepines
  3. Mechanism of Action
    Flumazenil antagonizes the actions of benzodiazepines in the CNS. Inhibits their action on the gamma aminobutyric acid- benzodiazepine complex. Reverse the sedative effects of the benzodiazepine.
  4. Onset of Action
    • Onset:1-5 min

    • Peak:6-10 min

    • Duration:2-4 hours

    • Half Life:54 min

  5. Indications

    To reverse CNS and respiratory depression associated with benzodiazepines

  6. Contraindications

    Know hypersensitivity to drug

  7. Precautions
    Administer with caution to PT’s dependant on benzodiazepines because it may induce life-threatening benzodiazepine withdrawal, do not use as a “coma cocktail”
  8. Side Effects
    • dizziness
    • fatigue
    • headache
    • nervousness
    • agitation
    • flushing
    • confusion
    • convulsions
    • dysrhythmias
    • nausea
    • vomiting.
  9. Adult Dose

    0.2 mg IV over 30 seconds, repeated as needed to a max dose of 1.0mg
