  2. Description

    Benzodiazepine that has strong hypnotic and amnesic properties

  3. Mechanism of Action
    Benzodiazepines bind to specific sites on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) Type A receptors within the brain. GABA is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter of the central nervous system. Increased GABA levels cause sedation.
  4. Onset of Action:
    • Onset:(RESP)1.5min(IV)15min(IM)3-5min

    • Peak:20-60min

    • Duration:(IV)<2hr(IM)1-6hr

    • Half-Life:1-4hr

  5. Indications
    Premedication before cardioversion, acute anxiety state, anticonvulsant, induction agent for RSI
  6. Contraindications
    Hypersensitivity to drug, narrow angle glaucoma, shock
  7. Precautions
    • Emergency resuscitative equipment available
    • Flumazenil should be available.
    • Dilute with NS or D5W before IV administration
    • Respiratory depression more common with Versed than with other benzodiazepines.

    • Bradycardia
    • Drowsiness
    • Dyspnea
    • Larygospasm
    • Respiratory depression/arrest
    • Tachycardia
    • PVC’s
    • Retching
  9. Adult Dose:
    IV:1.0-2.5 mg, IM .07 to .08 mg/kg
  10. Pedi-Dose
    0.03mg/kg
  11. Max Dose
    Administer as needed
