Factors that Regulate Ventilation Rate

  1. Stimulus: stretch of lung
    Receptor: stretch receptor in lung

    Effect: inhibits repsiration
  2. Stimulus: increase PCO2
Receptor: peripheral chemoreceptors and medullary respiratory center

Effect: increased PCO2 causes decrease pH via carbonic anhydrase: the decreased pH is what actually sensed
  3. Stimulus: decrease pH
Receptor: peripheral chemoreceptors and medullary respiratory center

    Effect: increases respiratory rate
  4. Stimulus: decrease PO2
    Receptor: peripheral chemoreceptors

    Effect: increases respiratory rate
  5. Stimulus: chemical irritation
    Receptor: irritant receptor in lung

    Effect: coughing and/or bronchoconstriction
