Unit 2 Hormones

  1. Oxytocin (OT)
    • Released by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland
    • In response to GnRH.
    • OT increases contractions of the uterus.
  2. Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH)
    • Released by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland.
    • In response to increased blood osmolarity.
    • Acts on the kidneys to increase water retention.
  3. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
    • Secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland.
    • In response to GnRH.
    • Targets the ovaries (regulate egg development)
    • Targets the testes (regulate sperm production)
  4. Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
    • Secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland.
    • In response to GnRH.
    • Stimulates corpus callosum (ovaries).
    • Regulates secretion of testosterone (testes).
  5. Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)
    • Secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland.
    • In response to corticotrophin releasing hormone (CRH).
    • Stimulates the cortex of the adrenal to inc. secretion.
  6. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
    • Secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland
    • In response to thyroid releasing hormone (TRH)
    • Stimulates thyroid gland to increase release of hormones.
  7. Prolactin (PRL)
    • Secreted by the anterios lobe of the pituitary gland.
    • In response to prolactin releasing hormone (PRF).
    • Stimulates milk production (mammary gland).
    • Enhances testosterone production.
  8. Growth Hormone (GH)
    -somatotropin-
    • Secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland.
    • In response to growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH).
    • Promotes tissue growth of most body tissues.
  9. Thymopioetin & Thymosin
    • Secreted by the thyroid gland.
    • Regulate the development and activation of the immune system.
  10. Triiodothyronine (T3) & Tetraiodothyronine (T4)
    • Secreted by the thyroid gland.
    • Increase metabolic rate of target cells.
  11. Calcitonin
    • Secreted by parafollicular cells. (between thyroid follicles)
    • Decreases blood calcium levels.
    • Activates osteoblast to remove calcium from blood for bone.
  12. Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)
    • Secreted by the parathyroid glands.
    • Increases blood calcium levels.
    • Activates osteoclasts break down bone for calcium.
    • Increases calcium absorption in digestive system.
  13. E/NE & ACTH
    • E/NE- stimulates adrenal medulla to release hormones.
    • ACTH- stimulates adrenal cortex to release hormones.
  14. Mineralocorticoids
    • Includes aldosterone.
    • From zona glomerulosa.
    • Targets kidneys (increased sodium retention) which regulates other electrolytes in blood.
  15. Glucocorticoids
    • Includes Cortisol.
    • In zona fasciculata
    • In response to ACTH.
    • Fights stress by inc. blood glucose levels & dec. inflammation.
  16. Gonadocorticoids
    • Sex steroids (Androgens & Estrogens)
    • Responsible for female sex drive, pubic & axillary hair growth.
  17. Glucagon
    • Secreted by alpha cells of Islet of Langerhans.
    • In response to low blood glucose levels.
    • Inc. blood glucose by releasing glucose from glycogen.
  18. Insulin
    • Secreted by beta cells of Islet of Langerhans.
    • In response to inc. blood glucose levels.
    • Binds to target cell membrane receptors to allow glucose to enter.
  19. Somatostatin
    • Secreted by delta cells of Islets of Langerhans.
    • Modulates the secretion of insulin and glucagon.
  20. Prostaglandins
    • Secreted by most organs.
    • Coordinate tissue activity.
