50% Dextrose in Water

To provide glucose for patients who have low bloos glucose levels as determined by blood glocose reagent strips.

Glocose is the principal energy source utilized by the brain and other tissues. " Dextrose" is used to describe the six-carbon sugar that is the principal form of carbohydrate for the body. When the hypoglycemic pt is comatose, glucose can not be given by mouth-it can only be given IV

Hypoglycemia, acute alcoholism with coma

• No major contrainindications for hypoglycemic patients.
• May be detrimental to pts experiencing cerebral ischemia and or hemorrhage

Determine blood glucose level prior to administration. Preferably use larger veins. Localized irritation may occur when using smaller veins. Ensure patency of IV line prior to administration because of potential for necrosis.

• Standard dose of 50% dextrose in hypoglycemia is 25 grams (50 mls of a 50% solution) IV. If the first dose is ineffective after 12-15 minutes, give a second dose of 25 grams
• No pediatric dosing.
