    Recombinant DNA product from pancreatic alpha cells used to increase blood glucose levels.
  3. Mechanism of Action
    • Causes breakdown of stored glycogen to glucose

    • Inhibits synthesis of glycogen from glucose

    • Increases blood glucose levels

    • Smooth muscle relaxant

    • Exerts positive inotropic effects on heart

    • Decreases renal vascular resistance

  5. Indications
    • Hypoglycemia, Calcium Channel Blocker Overdose

    • B-blocker overdose

    • Food impaction in esophagus

  6. Contraindications
    Hypersensitivity to drug
  7. Precautions
    • Only effective if enough glycogen is stored in liver

    • Caution in pts with history of cardiovascular or renal disease

  8. Side Effects:
    Dizziness, headache, hypotension, nausea, vomiting
  9. Adult Dose
    • 0.25-0.5 units IV

    • If no IV access, 1 mg glucagon IM

  10. Pedi-Dose
    0.03 mg/kg

    One dose
