What is Biology?
The science that deals with life.
Science is the process used to solve problems & understand natural events.
Name two basic assumptions in science.
Natural events have specific causes.
Causes for events in nature can be identified.
Natural events follow general rules & patterns.
A recurrent natural event has a common cause.
Different people can observe the same natural events.
Natural laws hold true regardless of time & place.
Cause & Effect Relationships
When one event happens as a firect result of a preceding event.
Ex. Lightning causes Thunder.
Componenets of the Scientific Method.
Obervations
Questions & Exploration
Forming & Testing Hypothese
Evaluation of new information.
Review by peers.
A hypothese must be:
Logical
Account for all current information
Testable
Make the least possible assumptions
Name one non-science; why is it not a science?
History - because it is not testable so they cannot establish a cause & effect relationship.
What makes something alive?
Living things can manipulate energy & matter.
What are the 5 characteristics of living things?
Metabolic Processess
Generative Processes
Responsive Processes
Control
Unique Structural Organization
What is the Metabolic Process?
Organisms gain & store energy in the chemcial bonds in the ntrients they take in. (When we eat, we turn it into energy)
What is the Generative Processes?
Organisms grow by the increasing the number of cells & they reproduce.
What is the Responsive Process?
Organisms react to changes in their enviroment.
What is the Control Process?
Enable organisms to carry out metabolic processes in the right order.
Levels of Biological Organization

Levels of Biological Organization #2
Organ System - Many organs that perfor a particular function.
Organ - many tissues that perform a particular function.
Tissue - Many Cells that perform a particular function.
Cell - Simplest unit that shows characteristics of life.
Molecules - Specific arrangements of atoms.
