Racemic Epinephrine

  2. Description
    Racemic epinephrine is an Epinephrine variation used for inhalation to induce bronchodilation, reduce laryngeal edema and mucus secretions.
  3. Mechanism of Action
    Stimulates both alpha and beta adrenergic receptors. B2 effects more profound. Bronchodilation.
  4. Onset of Action
    • Onset:<5 min

    • Peak:5-15 min

    • Duration: 1-3 hours

    • Half-life: NA

  5. Indications
    Treatment of croup (laryngotracheobronchittis).
  6. Contraindications
    Epiglottitis
  7. Precautions
    Tachycardia, dysrhythmias. Monitor vital signs. PT may develop “rebound worsening” 30 to 60 minutes after the initial treatment or when effects subside. All children must be transported to hospital after administration.
  8. Side Effects
    Anxiety, Headache, Palpitations
  9. Adult Dose
    0.25-0.75ml of a 2.25 % solution in 2.0ml NS
  10. Pedi-Dose
    0.25-0.75ml of 2.25% solution in 2.0 ml NS
  11. Max Dose
    0.25-.075ml of 2.25%solution in 2.0 ml NS
  12. Routes of Administration

    Inhalation only (small volume nebulizer)
