Furosemide (Lasix)

  1. Decription
    A drug used to treat pulmonary edema and to lower blood pressure
  2. Mechanisim of Action
    A potent diuretic that inhibits sodium and chloride re-absorption in the kidney; causes venous dilation; extremely useful in the treatment of congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema; effects are usually seen within five minutes of administration; promotes venous pooling and stimulates the kidneys to excrete water; is a mainstay in the treatment of CHF
  3. Indications
    Congestive Heart failure, Pulmonary Edema
  4. Contrainindications
    In pregnancy-usage should be limited to life-threatening situations; Lasix has been known to cause fetal abnormalities
  5. Precautions
    Dehydration and electrolyte depletion can result from excessive doses of potent diuretics; should be protected from light
  6. Dosage and Administration
    40mg slow IV push; repeated in 40mg increments
