Magnesium Sulfate

  1. Mechanism of Action
    Magnesium is the second most plentiful cation of the intracellular fluid. It is essential for the activity of many enzym systems and plays an important role with regard to neurochemical transmission and muscular excitability.
  2. Indications and Usage
    IV magnesium sulfate is indicated for treatment of Torsades de Pointe, treatment of convulsions in severe toxemias (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia)
  3. Contraindications
    Should not be administered parenterally in patients with heart block of myocardial damage.
  4. Warning
    Magnesium Sulfate should be given very cautiously in the presence of serious impairment of renal function since it is excreated almost entirely by the kidneys.
  5. Dosage and Administration
    • Dose is 1-2 G IV over 2 minutes
    • Pediatric dose is 5mg/kg
