Naloxone(Narcan)

  1. Description
    A narcotic antagonist for the management and reveral of overdose caused by narctics or synthetic narcotics agents; May be effective in treatment of coma associated with alcohol ingestion
  2. Mechanism of Action
    Binds competivtively to central nervous system depressants, thus reversing the effects of narcotics- Morphine, Paregoric, Demerol, Dilaudid, Codine, Heroin, Percodan, Fentanyl, Methadone. Complete or partial reversal of depression caused by synthetic narcotic analgesic agents such as Nubain, Talwin, Stadol, Darvon. Also for Alcoholic coma and treatment of coma of unknown origin.
  3. Contraindications
    Should not be administered to a patient with a history of hypersensitivity to the drug
  4. Precautions
    Administer cautiously to pts who are possib;y physically dependent to narcotics; Withdrawl-type effects may occur in pts including newborn infants of mothers with narcotic dependence
  5. Dosage and Administration
    • Standard dose is 1-2 mg IV slow
    • Pediatric dose- 0.1mg/kg IV slow
