    - spongiform encelphalopathy when it occurs in humans
  2. Kuru:
    - spongiform encelphalopathy when it occurs in humans

    - initial cannibalistic tribe who discovered disease by eating infected human brains raw. (tribes who cooked brains had no incident of disease)
  3. Prion:
    - Smallest replicating agent

    - Proteins that cause many copies of themselves to form
  4. Scrapie:
    - spongiform encelphalopathy when it occurs in sheep
  5. Transmissible spongiform encephalopathy:
    - A gene in mammals codes for a brain protein that, on rare occasions, can fold unnaturally, then copies intself. These proteins no longer provide normal function to the brain. Eventually the brain fills with these useless proteins until brain damage occurs. Usually takes x10 years to develope, however death in eminant.

    - Brain developes holes that appear like a sponge.
