  1. The early church suffered great persecution under 3 particular emperors. Who were they, what did they expect of the Christians, and what was the result of the Christians not following?
    emperors: Decius, Ciocletion, and Galerius. The emperors wanted the Christians to think of them as their god and to not believe in the real God. If they did not follow this they were persecuted
  2. List the ways that the Edict of Milan changed life for Christians, be specific.
    It was no longer illegal to be a Christian and it was the end of Christian persecution.
  3. Who was Helena and what was her contribution to Christianity?
    She was emperor Constantine's mom and what she went to Jerusalem to get the holy cross and nails
  4. What do the books of the Old Testament teach us about our relationship with God and what do they reveal to us?
    God had a covenant with the Isrealites. God would never break his covenant and he promised to bring a savior.
  5. Who is St. Athanasius and what is one thing we know about him in relation to the bible?
    He was the bishop of Alexandria Egypt. We know that he wrote a letter of the first written list of the New Testament books
  6. What is the canon of the bible?
    The official list of sacred scripture. the Old Testament has 46 books and the New Testament has 27 books.
  7. Name the 4 early church Fathers
    Origen, Tertullian, St John Chrysostom, and St. Jerome.
  8. What did Origen contribute to our faith?
    Studied and explained scripture
  9. What did Tertullian contribute to our faith?
    developed a vocabulary of terms with which to describe faith.
  10. What did St. John Chrysostom contribute to our faith?
    Great preacher known as "golden mouth"
  11. What did St. Jerome contribute to our faith?
    translated the bible into Latin from Hebrew and Greek
  12. What does ecumenical council mean?
    of the whole world. all of the councils are guided by the Holy Spirit and they come together with all the Bishops and the Pope and it leads/guides us in faith
  13. Council- Nicaea
    325 A.D. called by constantine. made a creed to express the full divinity and full humanity of Jesus
  14. Council- Constantinople
    381 A.D. called by Theodosius. they repeated the teaching of Nicaea and made the Nicene creed which statues that we have one God in 3 persons (trinity)
  15. Council- ephesus
    431 A.D. they affirmed that Mary gave birth to Jesus and she was the mother of God
  16. Council- Chalcedon
    451 A.D. decided that Jesus was 1 person fully human and fully divine (Leo the Great said that) (this is the greatest council of all)

  18. What was the last ecumenical council? who called it? when did it occur?
    Vatican 2. called by Pope John XXXIII on October 11 1962-1965
