-
Thyroxine (T4)
- aka:Tetraiodothyronine(contains 4 iodine ions)
- Location: Thyroid gland
- Gland/Cells: Follicular epithelium
- Targets: Most cells
- Horomnal Effects: Increases energy utilization, oxygen consumption, growth, and development
- Regulatory Control: Stimulated by the TSH from the Adenohypophysis
-
Triiodothyronine (T3)
- aka:related to T4 but has three iodine ions
- Location: Thyroid gland
- Gland/Cells: Follicular epithelium
- Targets: Most cells
- Horomnal Effects: Increases energy utilization, oxygen consumption, growth, and development
- Regulatory Control: Stimulated by the TSH from the Adenohypophysis
-
Calcitonin (CT)
- Location :Thyroid gland
- Gland/Cells: "C"cells, Clear cells
- Targets: Bones, Kidneys
- Horomnal Effects: Decreases Ca2+ concentrations in body fluids
- Regulatory Control: Stimulated elevated blood Ca2+ levels; actions opposed by PTH
-
Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)
- Location: Parathyroid gland
- Gland/Cells: (chief) cells
- Targets: Bones, Kidneys
- Hormonal Effects: Increases Ca2+ concentrations in body fluids
- Regulatory Control: Stimulated by low blood Ca2+ levels; PTH effects enhanced by calcitriol and opposed to calcitonin
