Compares an individuals performance to the performance of a sample of his/her peers.
Standardized sample
a subgroup of individuals chosen to be representative of teh normative population of interest
Contrastive analysis
Childs utternaces are contrasted against "expanded" adult model
Age equvailent score
derived socres expressed as the chonological age or grade placement of that group for whom an obtained score was typical
standard scores
a general term refering to transformed or normalized scores used to compare an individuals performance to that of his/her peers standard scores
Standard Deviation
measure for expressing the amount of dispersion or variability ina set of scores with reference to the mean
Validity
the extent to which an insturment measures what it claims to measure
reliability
the extent to which results obtained by an instrument with a given subject are similar or consistent
Central Tendency
The tendency for observations or valused to cluster around some value
Baseline
The prevalent rate or frequncy at which a specific langauge behavior occurs prior to intervention
Target response
A language skill should be specified in such a way that its occurence or non-occurence can be easily identified
Criterion of Mastery
a structure used correctly in 90% of accuracy of obligatory contexts
Remedial Logic
goals based on normal sequence may not represent all children, goals are more functional may be more valuable to individuals clients to serve thier communication needs
Developmental logic approach
Goals are derrived from normal language devlopment sequences. children learn sturcre according to what is easier and more useful
Stimulus
The primary object/event/ relationship in whose presence a specific langauge behavior is expected response
Prompt
the primary verbal simuli presented to evoke a respone to the stimulus
Cues
audtiory, visula, and or kinesthetic/tactile stimlu provided in addtion to the primary stimulus to promote facilitate or support correct respondig by the client
Modeling
a procedure in wich the clinicain provides an auditory stimulus to be imitated by the client.
Imitation
A response by the client that is realitively immediate reproduction of an auditory stimulus (the model) provided by the clinician
Leveling
The ability of teh clinician to adjust the various management factors so as to fine tune the learning experience of a client
Expansion
A procedure used by the clinician that may supplement either imitative or spontateous response by the client
Extension
a procedure used by the clinician that involves commenting on the topic of a child's utternace but not necessarily using the same words
Generalization
transferring/maintaing the behavior to a varitey stimlu settings and audiences
Reinforcement
any event that follows a response and increases its frequency or strength
Establishment
creating a behavior that is infrequent or nonexistent
systematic programming plan
Orderly sequence of training steps that are designed to cause the client to produce a selected language behavior. Clinician provides maximum stimulus report in the early stages and gradually withdraws the support until the client is able to make the response more spontaneously
Expressive Language sample
determines the exsistence of a problem, describe the childs current baseline, determines goals for mangagemetn and measure behavioral change over time
Grammar
a Hypothesis is regarding the system of rules used by the speakers/listeners of a language to produce and understand sentences
Semantics
The study of how language units acquire meaning of the speakers/listners of a language sample
Pragmatics
study of speaker/listener intentions and relations and all elements of the context in which the message occurs
