What are valence electrons?
electrons that participate in chemical bonds, found in the atoms outer most shell.
What is a chemical bond
Region that forms when electrons from different atoms interact with each other.
Ionic Bond
formed when one atom accepts or donates one or more of its valence electrons to another atom
Covalent Bond
formed when atoms share valence electrons.
when atoms do not share electrons equally
Polar Covalent
bond is result
Electron
negative electric charge
Proton
positive electric charge.
What is the charge in magnitude of a proton and electron?
equal in magnitude.
yet opposite in sign, therefore electrically atrracted to each other.
Neutron
electrically neutral, have no charge and are not electrically attracted to either electrons or protons
Same size and mass
Protons and nuetrons.
both much larger in size as well as a mass difference of 1840 times greater then electron.
Nucleus
of atom contains protons and nuetrons. Carries a positive electrical charge.
electrons move around outside the nucleus
