  4. Transillumination for Frontal sinusd
    place light source against medial aspect of each supraorbital rim. View illumination as a dim red glow just above eyebrow.

    Performed if sinuses tender or infection suspected
  5. Transillumination for Maxillary sinuse
    place light source lateral to nose, just beneath medial aspect of eye. View illumination of hard palate through patient’s open mouth
  6. Oral mucosa in the older adult
    • ◦Oral mucosa is often drier and more fragile due to degeneration of epithelial lining of salivary
    • glands.
  7. Periodontal (gum) Disease
    —Periodontal literally means "around the tooth"

    —Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth

    —Bacteria in plaque causes the gums to become inflamed
