bio exam chap20

  1. Anatomy
    Structure
  2. Physiology
    Function
  3. 4 main categories of tissues in animals:
    • Epithelial tissue
    • Connective tissue
    • Muscle tissue
    • Nervous tissue
  4. Epithelial tissue
Covers the body and lines its organs and cavities
  5. 3 shapes of epithelial tissues
    • Squamous - like a fried egg
    • Cuboidal - as tall as they are wide
    • Columar - taller than they are wide
  6. Connective tissue
    • Binds and supports other tissues
    • Has 6 major types
  7. 6 major types of connective tissue:
    • Loose connective tissue (under the skin)
    • Fibrous connective tissue (forming a tendon)
    • Adipose tissue
    • Cartilage (at the end of a bone)
    • Bone
    • Blood
  8. Skeletal muscle
    Causes voluntary movements
  9. Cardiac muscle
    Pumps blood
  10. Smooth muscle
Moves walls of internal organs, such as the intestines
  11. Nervous tissue
    Forms a communication network
  12. Neurons
Carry signals by conducting electrical impulses
  13. Supporting cells
    Insulate axons and nourish neurons
  14. Endocrine system
    Controls body functions
  15. Skeletal and muscular systems
    Support and move the body
  16. Circulatory system
    Transports the food and oxygen
  17. Respiratory system
Absorbs oxygen and releases carbon dioxide
  18. Integumentary system
    Covers and protects the body
  19. Excretory system
    Disposes of certain wastes
  20. Lymphatic and immune systems
Protect the body from infection and cancer
  21. Reproductive system
    Perpetuates the species
  22. Digestive system
    Absorbs food
  23. Nervous system
    Controls body functions
  24. The skin consists of two layers:
    • Epidermis, at the surface
    • Dermis, inner layer
  25. Epidermis
    • Resists damage
    • Decreases water loss
    • Prevents penetration by microbes
  26. Dermis
    • Sensory information
    • Synthesis of Vitamin D
    • Temperature regulation
  27. Homeostasis
An internal steady state, ours is 98.6
  28. Human promote homeostasis by:
    • Adding clothing when we are cold
    • Drinking water when we are dehydrated
    • Eating when our calories are running low
  29. Negative feedback
Mechanisms that only permit small fluctuations around set points
