Common Respiratory Drugs

  1. Type of Respiratory Drugs
    • Bronchodilators
    • Anti-inflammatories
    • Anti-histamines
    • Mucolytics (Secretion Removal)
    • Anti-tussives (Cough Suppresant)
    • Unkind Respiratory Drugs
  2. Unkind Drugs
    - drugs used to treat unrelated conditions that adversely affects the Respiratory System

    • 2 Common types:
    • CNS Depressants - may cause respiratory depression
    • Cholinergic Drugs - may cause bronchospasm
  3. Bronchodilators
    - relaxes smooth muscle of bronchi

    • 4 Main Types:
    • 1. Beta-adrenergic Antagonists
    • 2. Anti-cholinergics
    • 3. Ipratoprium
    • 4. Xanthines
  4. Bronchodilators: Beta-Adrenergic Agonists
    • 1. Non-selective adrenergics - may act with equal strength on beta-1 (cardiac) and beta-2 (respiratory) receptors
    • Eg.
    • Epinephrine (Adrenaline, Primatene Mist)
    • Oxymetazoline (Afrin)

    • 2. Selective adrenergics - bronchodilator effects, but exert lesser influence on beta-1 (cardiac) receptors
    • Eg.
    • Short Acting
    • Albuterol (Proventil)
    • Metaproterenol (Alupent)
    • Terbutaline (Brethine)
    • Pirbuterol (Maxair)
    • Long acting
    • Serevent (Servent Diskus)
    • Formoterol (Foradil)
