2.13 Ice is less dense than liquid water

  1. What is unique about water?
Water is less dense as a solid than as a liquid
  2. Why is water less dense as a solid than as a liquid?
    because of hydrogen bonds
  3. Why does water float?
As water freezes, each molecule forms stable hydrogen bonds with four neighbors, holding them at arm's length. this makes the bonds more spaced out, ( the reason why water expands as it freezes) the ice crystals have fewer molecules than an equal volume of water
