2.13 Ice is less dense than liquid water

Water is less dense as a solid than as a liquid

because of hydrogen bonds

As water freezes, each molecule forms stable hydrogen bonds with four neighbors, holding them at arm's length. this makes the bonds more spaced out, ( the reason why water expands as it freezes) the ice crystals have fewer molecules than an equal volume of water
