AH Lab: IV Management Drugs

  1. Reglan (Metoclopramide) 10mg/ml
    • Onset: 1-3 min.
    • Action: it blocks dopamine receptors in the CNS causing motility in the upper GI tract
    • S/E: Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, drowsiness, constipation
    • Rate: given over 1-2 minutes
    • CHECK FOR COMPATIBILITY!!!
  2. Bumex (bumetanide) 0.25mg/ml
    • Onset: 2-3 min.
    • Action: blocks reabsorption of sodium and chloride, increases reanal excretion of water
    • S/E: dehydration, hyperglycemia, diarrhea, excess urination
    • Rate: 1-2 min.
    • CHECK FOR COMPATIBILITY!!!
  3. Morphine Sulfate 2mg/ml
    • Onset: rapid
    • Action: binds to opiate receptors, alters perception to pain
    • S/E: respiratory depression, constipation, urinary retention, confustion, sedation
    • Rate: over 5 min.
    • CHECK FOR COMPATIBILITY!!!
  4. Toradol (Ketorolac) 15mg/ml
    • Onset: 10 min.
    • Action: anti fever and anti inflammatory
    • S/E: GI bleeding, toxic epidermal necrolysis, drowsiness, edema
    • Rate: over 15 seconds
    • CHECK FOR COMPATIBILITY!!!
  5. Dilaudid (Hydromorphone) 2mg/ml
    • Onset: 10-15 min.
    • Action: binds to opiate receptors, alters perception of pain, suppresses cough reflex
    • S/E: confusion, respiratory despression, hypotension, constipation, urinary retention
    • Rate: 2mg over 3-5 min.
    • CHECK FOR COMPATIBILITY!!!
  6. Levothyroxine 100mcg/ml
    • Onset: 6-8 hrs.
    • Action: replace thyroid hormones, promotes cell growth
    • S/E: headache, abdominal cramps, sweating
    • Rate: 100mcg over 1 minute
    • CHECK FOR COMPATIBILITY!!!
  7. Zofran (Ondansetron) 2mg/ml
    • Onset: 15-30 min.
    • Action: blocks serotonin
    • S/E: headache, constipation, diarrhea, weakness
    • Rate: 2-5 min.
    • CHECK FOR COMPATIBILITY!!!
  8. Compazine (prochlorperazine) 5mg/ml
    • Onset: 10-30 min.
    • Action: alters effects of dopamine in CNS
    • S/E: Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, Agranulocytosis, hyperthermia, blurred vision, constipation, ECG changes, dry mouth
    • Rate: 1mg every minute
    • CHECK FOR COMPATIBILITY!!!
  9. Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) 50mg/ml
    • Onset: rapid
    • Action: CNS depressant, antagonizes effects of histamine
    • S/E: pain at site, anorexia, blurred vision, drowsiness
    • Rate: less than 25 mg/min
    • CHECK FOR COMPATIBILITY!!!
  10. DDAVP (Desmopressin) 4mcg/ml
    • Onset: within a minute
    • Action: enhanced reabsorption of water in the kidneys
    • S/E: seizures, nasal congestion, abdominal cramps, hypertension,
    • Rate: over 1 min.
    • CHECK FOR COMPATIBILITY!!!
  11. Heparin sodium 1000units/ml 
    • Onset: immediate
    • Action: neutralizes thrombin
    • S/E: bleeding, fever, pain at site, hepatitis
    • Rate: over 1 min.
    • CHECK FOR COMPATIBILITY!!!
  12. Fentanyl 50mcg/ml
    • Onset: 1-2 min.
    • Action: binds to opiate receptors, alters perception of pain, CNS depression
    • S/E: apnea, laryngospasm, facial itching, confusion, blurred/double vision
    • Rate: 1-3 min.
    • CHECK FOR COMPATIBILITY!!!
