Ipratropium Bromide (Atrovent)

    Anticholinergic
  2. Description:
    • Anticholinergic (parasympatholytic) bronchodilator that is chemically related to atropine
    • Parasympatholytic used in treatment of respiratory emergency
  3. Mechanism of Action
    • Causes bronchodilation and dries respiratory tract secretions
    • Blocks acetylcholine receptors, thus inhibiting parasympathetic stimulation
  4. Onset of Action:
    • Onset: Varies
    • Peak Effects: 1.5-2.0 hours
    • Duration: 4-6 hours
    • Half-life: 1.5-2.0 hours
  5. Indications
    • Bronchial Asthma
    • Reversible bronchospasm associated with chronic bronchitis and emphysema
  6. Contraindications:
    • Acute treatment of bronchospasm
    • Hypersensitivity to drugs (Soy and Peanut Alleregies)
  7. Precautions:
    • MUST monitor vital signs (Lung sounds and flow rate)
    • Elderly Patients
    • Cardiovascular disease and HTN
  8. Side Effects
    • Anxiety
    • Dizziness
    • Headache
    • Nausea/vomiting
    • Nervousness
    • Palpitations
    • Rash
  9. Adult Dose:
    500 ug in a small volume nebulizer @ 6-10 lpm (Usually mixed with Albuterol 2.5mg) “Combivent Treatment”
