Atropine

  1. Class:
    Parasympatholytic (anticholinergic)
  2. Description:
    Parasympathetic that is derived from parts of the Atropa belladonna plant
  3. Mechanism of Action
    • Blocks acetylcholine receptors
    • Increase heart rate NOT DIRECTLY
    • Decrease gastrointestinal secretions
  4. Onset of Action:
    • Immediate
    • Peak Effects: 2-4 minutes
    • Duration: 4 hours
    • Half-life: 2-3 hours
  5. Indications:
    • Hemodynamically significant bradycardia
    • Hypotension secondary to bradycardia
    • Asystole
    • Bradycadic PEA
  6. Contraindications:
    None when used in emergency situations
  7. Precautions:
    • Tachycardia
    • Hypertension
  8. Side Effects
    Anxiety,Blurred vision, Dizziness, Dry mouth, Headache, Palpitations, Pupillary dilation, Tachycardia, Urinary Retention (older Men)
  9. Adult Dose:
    • Bradycardia: .5mg every 3-5 minutes (no more than 3 mg)
    • Asystole: 1 mg over 3-5 minutes (no more than 3mg)
    • Organophosphate poisoning 2-5 mg
  10. Pedi-Dose:
    Bradycardia: .02 mg/kg (Min. 01 mg) {Epi is 1st Line}
  11. Max Dose:
    • Adult 3 mg
    • Pedi- Single Dose: .5 mg Total Dose 1 mg
    • Adolescent Single Dose: 1 mg Totals Dose 2 mg

    IV or IO
