ASPIRIN

    • Platelet aggregator inhibitor
    • Anti-inflammatory agent
  2. Description:
    Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory agent and an inhibitor of platelet function. This makes it a useful agent in the treatment of various thromboembolic diseases such as acute MI.
  3. Mechanism of Action
    Block the formation of the substance thromboxane A2, which causes platelets to aggregate and arteries to constrict. These results in an overall reduction in mortality associated with an MI
  4. Onset of Action
    • Onset: 5-30 Minutes
    • Peak Effects: 15-120 Minutes
    • Duration: 1-4 Hours
    • Half-life: 15-20 Minutes
  5. Indications
    New chest pain suggestive of acute coronary syndrome
  6. Contraindications:
    • Known hypersensitivity to drug
    • Acute Ulcer Disease
    • Asthma
  7. Precautions
    • GI upset and bleeding (Use Enteric Coated Aspirin with pts that have tendency with GI bleeding and irritation)
    • Pt who report NSAID allergy
    • Higher doses can interfere with possible benefits
  8. Side Effects
    • Heartburn
    • GI bleeding
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Wheezing
    • Prolonged Bleeding
  9. Adult Dose
    81mg tablets x 4 tablets= 324mg
  10. Pedi-Dose
    Reye’s Syndrome is why ASA is not given to pedi
