  1. alliteration
    • the repetition of the same or similar sounds
    • She sells sea shells by the sea shore.
  2. onomatopeia
    • when words are used to imitate sounds
    • bang, boom, pow
  3. assonance
    • patern or repetition of similar sounds, especially vowels
    • Try to light the fire.
  4. consonance
    • repetition of similar consonant sounds
    • dark deep dread
  5. end rhyme
    • a rhyme that occurs in the last syllables of verses
    • Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening
  6. Internal Rhyme
    • when a word in the middle of a line rhymes with a word at the end
    • Shelley's "The Cloud"
  7. Rhyme Scheme
    • the pattern of a rhyme (AA,BB...)
    • Patrachian sonnets follow ABBA, ABBA, CDE, CDE
  8. repetition
    • something being done over and over again
    • most stanzas in "The Raven" end with more
  9. refrain
    • a group of lines that is repeated throught a poem
    • in songs the refrain is usually repeated during verses
  10. simile
    • when two things are compared using like or as
    • The house was as green as grass.
  11. metaphor
    • comparing two things by saying one is like the other
    • Life is a Journey
  12. personification
    • giving human like qualities to things or ideas
    • The candlestick in Beauty and the Beast
  13. hyperbole
    • adding deliberate exageration for emphasis
    • Paul Bunyon chopped down a forest with one swing of his ax.
  14. paradox
    • an apparent contridiction that upon closer examination proves to be true
    • You cannot walk out the door because you must always go halfway.
  15. apostrophe
    • words that are spoken to a person who is absent or imaginary
    • "Science, true daughter of old time thou art" ~Poe
  16. synecdoche
    • where a part is used to designate the whole or vise versa
    • "All hands on deck."
  17. metonymy
    • where one word or phrase is substituted for another with which it is closely associated
    • The crown of England held great power.
  18. scansion
    • the analysis of a poems meter
    • Iambic Pentameter
  19. meter
    • arrangement of a line of poetry by the number of syllables and rhythm
    • Iambic Pentameter
  20. Iamb
    • a metericasl foot of 2 syllables one unstressed and stressed (short then long)
    • trapeze
  21. trochee
    • a metrical foot of 2 syllables one stressed and one unstressed (long and short)
    • Window
  22. anapest
    • a metrical foot of 3 syllables two short one long
    • The Cat in the Hat
  23. Dactyl
    • a metrical foot of 3 syllables one long then 2 short
    • basketball

    • arrangement of a line of poetry by the number of syllables

  25. stanza
    • division or unit that is repeated in the same form
    • couplet, tercet, quatrain
  26. couplet, tercet, quatrain, quintet, sestet, septet, octet
    • 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, lined stanza
    • Shakespeare sonnets have 3 quatrains and 2 couplets
