  2. Disulfiram (Antabuse):

    Goal:
    S/S:
    Develop fear of reaction

    • N/V
    • Tachycardia
  3. Naltrexone (ReVia):

    Action:
    S/S:
    • Opiate antagonist
    • (Decreases pleasure with drinking and opitate use too)

    • Nausea
    • GI Distress
    • Headache

    (Start on low dose of 25mg and work up to therapeutic dose of 50mg)
  4. What types of drugs help treat Opiate abuse?
    • Naltrexone (ReVia)
    • Methadone
    • Buprenorphine (Subutex or Suboxone)

    (Decrease relapse rates)
  5. Methadone:

    Action:
    Benefit:
    Risks:
    S/S:
    Blocks pleasure receptors

    • Decrease relapse rates, IV drug use, mortality
    • Increase social and occupational function

    • Increase QT interval
    • Patient will use heroin as well

    • Respiratory depression
    • Constipation
    • Difficult withdrawal
    • 3 year treatment
  6. Buprenorphine (Subutex or Suboxone):

    Action:
    Opiate agonist

    Decrease cravings but not as effective as methadone
