Joints
* Are functional connections between bones
* Enable movements of bones
* Allows changes of bone shape during developments
* Can be classified according to the type of tissues or according to their degree of mobility
Structural classification of joints
* Fibrous
* Cartilage
* Synovial
Fibrous Joints
* Found between bones that are in very close contact with each other
* Made of dense connective tissue
* Found in the skull
* Known as suture
* Immovable joint
: Synarthroses
Cartilaginous Joints
* Made of hyaline or fibrocartilage
* Absorbs shock and helps equalize pressure between adjacent bones
* Found in between vertebra of the vertebral column
* Slightly movable joint
: Amphiarthroses
Synovial joint
* Freely movable joints
: Diathroses
* More complex than fibrous or cartilaginous
* The articular ends of the bones are covered in hyaline cartilage
* Joints capsule is made of dense connective tissue to hold the bones together
* Synovial membrane secretes synovial fluid
* Synovial cavity contains the synovial fluid to lubricate the joint
Joint movements
1. Flexion, extension, & hyperextension
2. Adduction & abduction
3. Dorsiflexion & plantar flextion
4. Supination & pronation
