Albuterol (Proventil)

    Sympathomimetic (β 2 Selective)
  2. Description:
    Sympathomimetic that is selective for β2 adrenergic receptors but has minor β1 effects
  3. Mechanism of Action
    Bronchodialtion
  4. Onset of Action
    • 5-15 Minutes inhaled
    • Peak Effects: 1-1.5 hours
    • Duration 3-6 hours
    • Half-life <3 hours
  5. Indications
    Reversible bronchospasms associated with COPD, asthma, allergic reaction, and pulmonary edema
  6. Contraindications:
    Known hypersensitivity to the drug
  7. Precautions
    • B/P, Pulse, ECG results should be monitored
    • Pt with known heart disease
  8. Side Effects
    • Palpitations
    • Tremors
    • Hypertension
    • Arrhythmias
    • Chest pain
    • Nausea and Vomiting
    • Anxiety/Nervousness
    • Headache
    • Dizziness
    • Sweating
  9. Adult Dose:
    Nebulizer 2.5mg/ 2.5ml NS with O2 at 6-10 L/min
  10. Pedi-Dose:
    • .15 mg/kg (.03ml/kg) in 2.5ml NS via Small inhaler
    • Single Pedi dose 2.5ml
  11. Max Dose:
    Pre-hospital Adult Dose: 2 doses
