  1. Peripheral IV Insertion
    bsi, scene safe, ppe






    selects appropriate IV fluid, checking clarity,color,expiration date





    selects appropriate catheter





    selects appropriate administration set






    properly inserts IV tubing in to the IV bag





    prepares administration set, fills drip chamber and flushes tubbing





    cuts or tears tape





    applies constricting band, checks distal pulse

    holds ampule with gauze pad and flicks ampule with fingertip to get fluid into base





    holds ampule on top and bottom with gauze





    breaks ampule open by holding upright and breaking away from self





    removes needle cap





    inserts filter needle into ampule so fluid cover bevel





    pulls back on plunger and withdraws correct amount of medication





    rechecks medication and amount





    changes filter needle to proper needle for medication administration





    disposes of filter needle in proper container





    examines barrel of syringe for air and expels any extra fluid rechecking amount

    pulls plunger back to same volume to be withdrawn from vial

    injects air from syringe into vial





    inserts vial so fluid covers bevel of needle and withdraws correct amount medication





    withdraws needle from stopper and rechecks medication and amount





    examines barrel of syringe for air and expels any extra fluid, rechecking amount

  5. sublingual administration

  6. nebulizer administration

    elicits allergy history and explains procedure

    inspects medication for discoloration, clarity, and expiration date





    obtains baseline lung sounds





    places patient on cardiac monitor





    places medication into nebulizer reservoir and tightly closes





    hooks appropriate end of nebulizer tubing to oxygen





    secures mouth piece or mask to reservoir end





    turns on oxygen until mist flows from mouthpiece of nebulizer





    places mask on patient or assists patient in holding mouthpiece and closing off nose





    encourages patient to breathe slowly with adequate tidal volume





    adjusts oxygen flow so medicates mist is inhaled with each breath, not flowing throughout





    monitors patient throughout administration





    reassesses patient for change in condition, both desired and undesired effects





    correctly document administration and patient response
  7. intramuscular injection

    inserts needle at 90 degree angle and aspirates for blood return(45 degree angle for subcutaneous)





    if no blood return, injects medication at appropriate rate





    place DSD over insertion site and holds while quickly removing needle





    massages site, if appropriate, while disposing of needle and syringe in proper container





    checks site for hemostasis and applies dressing





    monitors patient for desired effects and potential complications





    correctly records injection site and patient response
  8. pediatric intraosseus insertion
    bsi,scene safe,ppe






    verbalizes indications for fluid administration and peripheral line is unable to be obtained





    selects correct IV fluid,proper size of bag, and checks clarity and expiration date





    prepares appropriate equipment to include IO needle,syringe, 10cc sterile saline





    selects extension set and minidrip administration set





    attaches administration set to bag





    prepares administration set, fills drip chamber and flushes tubing





    draws saline into syringe and attaches to extension tubing





    primes extension tubing until NO air is in tubing or fluid





    cuts and tears tape





    ppe





    identifies proper anatomical site for IO puncture





    checks distal PMS





    cleanses site appropriately





    firmly grasps tibia and inserts needle at 90 degree angle to tibial plateau





    with controlled pressure twist needle into bone until feel pop





    unscrews cap and removes styler from needle





    properly disposes of stylet





    attaches syringe and extension set to IO needle and aspirates





    slowly injects saline to assure proper placement of needle





    connects administration set and adjust flow rate as appropriate





    secures needle with tape and supports with bulky dressing





    assesses patients response to intervention
