Barriers! Natural are the first line. There are two kinds, mechanical and chemical.

What is a mechanical barrier?

- Other barriers – lachrymal apparatus, saliva, and epiglottis

Tell me about skin
Devided into two layers, the epidermis and dermis. A loss of skin can lead to serious infection.

Tell me about mucus membranes.
- Systems with access to the outside of the body.
- GI tract
- Respiratory tract
- Genitourinary tract
The primary function is to keep tissues moist. They can trap microorganisms in the mucus.

What is the Lachrymal Apparatus?
Protects the eye from entry of pathogens. Causes the tears to flow across the eye and tears contain lysozyme, lipocalin, and IgA

How is saliva a mechanical barrier?
It cleans teeth and tissues of the oral cavity, prepares food for digestion, inhibits microbial growth and contains lysozyme and IgA.

What does the epiglottis do?
Prevents food from aspirating into the lungs and prevents entry of microorganisms into the lungs.
