-
What is innate immunity?
non specific, immediately abailable, without memory
-
What adaptive immunity?
specific, takes several days to develop, has memory
-
What are the first lines of defence?
Barriers! Natural are the first line. There are two kinds, mechanical and chemical.
-
What is a mechanical barrier?
- Skin
- Mucous membranes
- Other barriers – lachrymal apparatus, saliva, and epiglottis
-
Tell me about skin
Devided into two layers, the epidermis and dermis. A loss of skin can lead to serious infection.
-
Tell me about mucus membranes.
- Systems with access to the outside of the body.
- GI tract
- Respiratory tract
- Genitourinary tract
The primary function is to keep tissues moist. They can trap microorganisms in the mucus.
-
What is the Lachrymal Apparatus?
Protects the eye from entry of pathogens. Causes the tears to flow across the eye and tears contain lysozyme, lipocalin, and IgA
-
How is saliva a mechanical barrier?
It cleans teeth and tissues of the oral cavity, prepares food for digestion, inhibits microbial growth and contains lysozyme and IgA.
-
What does the epiglottis do?
Prevents food from aspirating into the lungs and prevents entry of microorganisms into the lungs.
-
What are some of the many chemical substances secreted by the body?
- Sebum
- Perspiration
- Gastric juice
- Urine
Barrier defence is not their primary function
