RESPIRATORY SYS & FUNCTIONS

  1. I.) FUNCTION:
    • * Moves air in/out of the lungs
    • * Delivers O2
    • * Removes CO2
    • * External respiration: occurs in the lungs
    • * Internal respiration: Occurs in the Hemoglobin
  2. II) ORGANS:
    • * Nose * :Pharynx * Larynx
    • * Trachea * Bronchial Tree * Lungs
  3. III) Nasal Cavity:
    • 1. Nasal Septum divides the cavity in/2 the LT/RT portions
    • 2.) Mucous membrane warms & moistens in the air
    • 3) Cilia {Hair} helps eliminate particles

    • *Air filled spaces w/in the skull bones. Open 2 the nasal cavity
    • * Reduce the wieght of the skull
    • * Gives the voice a certain tone
  4. IV): PHARYNX
    * Serves both Respiratory & Digestive Sys
  5. V) LARYNX {Voice Box}
    • * Moves Air in/out of the Trachea & produces voice
    • * Composed by 3 Categories:

    • 1. Thyroid Cartilage
    • 2. Epiglottli or Epiglottis Cartilage
    • 3. Cricoid Cartilage
  6. Va} VOCAL CORDS:
    • * Stretched bet. the Thyroid cartilage & Cricoid Cart. {Across}
    • * Upper - False Cords
    • * Lower - True Cords
    • * Glottis - The "Opening" bet the Vocal Cords
    • * Stretch - Pitch of the Voice
  7. VI} TRACHEA:
    • * Referred as the "Wind Pipe"
    • * Tubular org made up of "rings of cartilage & smooth muscle"
    • * Extends frm the Larynx 2 the Bronchi
    • * Lined w/cells possesing the Cilia
    • ** Cilia moves Mucus up 2 the throat; smoking destroys Cilia
  8. VII} Bronchial Tree:
    • 1. Bronchi - 1st branches of the Trachea
    • 2. Bronchioles - 2ndary Branches
    • 3. Alveoli - Place of gas exchange process
    • 3.1 - This "sac" of the cells is surrounded by Capillaries
    • 3.2 - Secret surfactant

    • * Cone: Shaped org
    • * RT/Lung: (3) Lobes
    • * LT/Lung: (2) Lobes
    • * Pleura: Membrane surrounding the Lungs
