*HEMATOLOGY*

  1. BLOOD: is a type of connective tiss
    • * RED Blood Cells {RBC}- "Erythrocytes"
    • * WHITE Blood Cells {WBC} - "Leukocytes"
    • * Platelets/Thrombocytes - "Fragments" / "Clotting Cells"
    • * Plasma - "The Fluid part of the blood"
  2. Blood Components:
    • *Hematocrit* {Hematocrit is a blood test that measures the percentage of the volume of whole blood that is made up of red blood cells}
    • - % of RBC is normally 45%
    • - % of WHB & Platelets is normally 1%
    • - % of Plasma is normally 55%
  3. A.) RED BLOOD CELLS: ERYTHROCYTES
    • * Transport 02 thru the bdy
    • * Small bi/concave - shaped cells
    • * Hemoglobin is a pigment of the RBC's
    • * Erythropoietin - regulates production of RBC's
  4. B.) W.B.C/LEUKOCYTES:

    *GRANULOCYTES/PMN'S*...
    "PMN: Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes"
    1.) Neutrophils = 55% - destroy bacteria, viruses & toxins in the blood stream {Phagocytes}
  5. B.) W.B.C/LEUKOCYTES: *GRANULOCYTES*.
    2.) Eosinophils = 3% - Gets rid of parasitic infections; such as, "Worm Infection"
  6. B.) W.B.C/LEUKOCYTES: *GRANULOCYTES*.
    3.) BASOPHILS: = 1% - Controls inflamation & allergic reaction
  7. B.) W.B.C/LEUKOCYTES: *AGRANULOCYTES*
    1) MONOCYTES: 8% - Destroy bacteria, viruses, & toxins in the blood.
  8. B.) W.B.C/LEUKOCYTES: *AGRANULOCYTES*
    • 2) LYMPHOCYTES: 33% - Provides immunity in the body
    • - WBC count is normally 5, 000 2 10,000 cells per/cubic milimeter of blood.
  9. B.) W.B.C/LEUKOCYTES: *AGRANULOCYTES*
    • 2a) *LEUKOCYTOSIS:
    • - Elevated blood cell count, usually due 2 infection {abnormal condition of W.B.C}
  10. B.) W.B.C/LEUKOCYTES: *AGRANULOCYTES*
    • 2c) *LEUKOPENIA:
    • - Low WBC ct usually due 2 Viral Infections & other conditions {Decreased amt in WBC}
  11. C.) PLATELETS: *THROMBOCYTES*
    • * Fragments of cells found in the bloodstream
    • * Important in the clotting process of blood
    • * Normal Ct: 130,000 2 360, 000 platelets per/cb mm {per cubic milimeter} of blood
  12. D.) PLASMA:
    • * 55% of blood
    • * Liquid portion of the blood composed mostly of water, but it also contains:

    • - PROTEINS - NUTRIENTS
    • - GASES {O2 & CO2} - ELECTROLYTES
    • - WASTE PRODUCTS
  13. I.) BLEEDING CONTROL:
    "HEMOSTATIS' - The Control of Bleeding
    • The 3 Processes of Hemostatis:
    • 1) Blood Vessel Spasm
    • 2) Platelets Plug Formation
    • 3) Coagulation
  14. BLOOD TYPES: Blood Types R distinguished by Antigens & Antibodies *Blood Types* {BT} Antigen Present {AG/P} Antibody Present {A/P}
    {BT}: "A" will hve an {AG/P}of "A" type, which will hve an {A/P}of type "B" & Blood tht Can B Received: is "A & O" TYPE
  15. BLOOD TYPES: Blood Types R distinguished by Antigens & Antibodies

    "WRD/KEY"*Blood Types* {BT} Antigen Present {AG/P} Antibody Present {A/P}
    {BT}: "B" will hve an {AG/P}of "B" type, which will hve an {A/P}of type "A" & Blood tht Can B Received: is "B & O" TYPE
  16. BLOOD TYPES: Blood Types R distinguished by Antigens & Antibodies

    "WRD/KEY"*Blood Types* {BT} Antigen Present {AG/P} Antibody Present {A/P}
    {BT}: "AB" will hve an {AG/P}of "AB" type, which will hve an {A/P}of type "None" & Blood tht Can B Received: is "AB, A, B, & O" TYPE
  17. BLOOD TYPES: Blood Types R distinguished by Antigens & Antibodies "WRD/KEY"*Blood Types* {BT} Antigen Present {AG/P} Antibody Present {A/P}
    {BT}: "O" will hve an {AG/P}of "None" type, which will hve an {A/P}of type "AB" & Blood tht Can B Received: is Type "O"
  18. RH {ANTIGEN}: Protein on RBC
    • RH: Positive
    • RH: Negative
    • RH: Resus Factor
