Glycolysis

  1. What occurs in the first step of glycolysis?
    Glycogen is broken into glucose-6-phosphate through hexokinase.
  2. What is the cost of the first step in glycolysis?
    An ATP is used to break down glycogen resulting in ADP.
  3. What is the second step in glycolysis?
    Glucose-6-Phosphate is isomerized into fructose-6-phosphate by g-6-p isomerase.
  4. What occurs in step 3 of glycolysis?
    The fructose-6-phosphate is transformed into fructose-1-6-biphosphate through PFK. This step also uses one ATP.
  5. Why is step 3 of glycolysis important?
    It is the rate limiting step?
  6. What is this group?

    H------C====O
    An aldehyde group.
  7. What is step 4 of glycolysis?
    Aldolase splits f-1-6-bisphosphate into two 3 carbon triose sugar groups. Glyceraldehyde-3-phoshphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate(dhap).
  8. What occurs in step 5 of glycolysis?
    DHAP is isomerized by triose-p-isomerase to create a second glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate. At this point all reactions are now doubled.
  9. What is the total net cost and products after step 5?
    -2 Atp and 2 g-3-p molecules
