Opioid analgesic (narcotic)

Binds to various opioid receptors, producing analgesiaand sedation (opioid agonist)

Moderate to severe pain, adjunct in rapid sequence induction(intubation)

Severe hemorrhage and shock. Patients who have taken MAO inhibitors within the last 14 days should avoid fentanyl! Severe andunpredictable potentiation is possible. Use with caution, if atall in any patient with a head injury (except during RSI).

Drowsiness, hypotension, bradycardia, and respiratory depressionare most common, however it may cause N&V, weakness, anddizziness, increased excitability (paradoxical)

2 mcg/kg IV or IM, usually up to 100 mcg

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent

NSAIDs inhibit cyclooxygenase and prevent thesynthesis of prostaglandins and thromboxane, whichreduce inflammation and ultimately provide pain relief

Mild to moderate pain

Allergy to NSAIDs

60 mg IM or 30 mg IV (decrease dose by ½ if > 65 y/o)

Inhalational Anesthetic

CNS depressant with analgesic properties

Pain secondary to trauma / burn, renal calculi

Patients who cannot comprehend verbal instructions, whoare intoxicated with alcohol or drugs, head-injury associatedwith altered LOC, COPD, thoracic injury (suspicious ofpneumothorax), abdominal pain suggestive of bowelobstruction, any patient who is otherwise hypoxic

A positive pressure demand valve mask is given to the patient – selfadministered at 50% NO/50% O2. The patient will drop the mask,preventing the induction of anesthesia when unable to hold the maskup any longer
