    • -happens early in embryonic development

    • -middle of neural tube closes first
    • -failure of anterior (rostral ) part of neural tube to close
    • .no forebrain forms = anencephanly
    • .fatal
    • -failure of posteror (candal) part of neural tube to close
    • .malformation of spinal cord spina bifida
    • -usually not fatal
    • -paralysis

    • -in the u.s food is fortified w/ folic acid

    • -progenitor cells start to divide
    • -give rise to neurons
    • . once differentiated into neurons-stop dividing
    • . some progentior cells (neural stem cells) stay: adult neurogenisis
    • -in humans neurogenesis occurs betwen 5th week and 5th month of pregenacy
    • -at peack 250000 new neurons/ min
