What two types of microscopes do scientists use to observe cells? What is the difference between these two microscopes?

Light microscopes - Used to view cells but not in much detail

Electron Microscopes - Allow the structure of cells to be viewed in greater detail
What is the cell theory?

- The cell is th basic unit of an organism - All organisms are composed of cells - Cells come only from preexisting cells
How do cells benefit by having a high surface to volume ratio?

-A cell needs a relatively large surface area for efficient absorption of nutrients and secretion of wastes
Compare and contrast eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.
- Eukaryotic - have membrane-bound organelles
- Prokaryotic - lack membrane-bound organelles
