Properties of Arithmetic

  1. Communitive property of addition
    a + b = b + a
  2. Associative property of multiplication
    ab = ba
  3. Associative property of addition
    (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
  4. Associative property of multiplication
    (ab)c = a(bc)
  5. Distributive property
    a(b + c) = ab + ac
  6. Reflexive property
    • a = a
    • any number is equal to itself.
  7. Transitive property
    • If a = b and b = c, then a = c.
    • This property also takes the form of the substitution property, which says that if b = c, you can substitte c for b.
  8. Symmetric property
    If a = b, then b = a
  9. Addition property
    If a = b, then a + c = b + c
  10. Subtraction property
    If a = b, then a - c = b - c
  11. Multiplication property
    If a = b the ac = bc.

    also, if a = b and c = d the ac = bd
  12. Division property
    if a = b, then a/c = b/c provided c does not = 0
  13. Square root property
    If a square = b the a = the square root of b
  14. Zero product property
    if ab = 0, then a = 0 or b = 0 or both a and b = 0
