    • -Resulted from Bolshevik revolution in 1917, which created a small Communist party in America
    • -Tension in Republic near war's end led to belief that Bolsheviks were behind it
    • -1919 - general strike in Seattle, though orderly and modest, called in federal troops to head off "the anarchy of Russia".
    • -Billy Sunday: denounced Bolsheviks
    • -Resulted in nationwide crusade against left-wingers
    • -December 1919 - shipload of 249 alleged alien radicals deported on Buford ("Soviet Ark") to "workers paradise" in Russia
    • -September 1920: unexplained Wall Street bomb blast

    • -"saw red" too easily
    • -"Fighting Quaker" nickname because he rounded up suspects with excess zeal
