MED-Ketorolac

  1. Functional Class
    Analgesic, NSAID
  2. Mechanism of Action
    Reversibly blocks the action of cyclooxygenase which in turn prevents formation of prostaglandins. Causes analgesia equivalent to that of morphine sulfate
  3. Indications
    Acute moderate to severe pain
  4. Contraindications
    NSAID allergy, ASA sensitivity asthma, known peptic ulcer disease, recent GI bleed, renal failure, confirmed cerebrovascular bleeding, recent CABG, pregnancy
  5. Precautions
    Use cautiously with CHF and cirrhosis patients due to renal failure
  6. Side Effects
    • GI bleeding
    • Inhibition of platelet aggregation
    • Acute renal failure
    • N/V
    • Diarrhea
  7. Interactions
    Potentiates medications that inhibit platelet aggregation
  8. Dose and Route
    Adult: 15-30 mg IV or 30-60 mg IM (single dose only)
