The Eastern Provinces
- *includes 4 provinces
- 1) Newfoundland
- 2) Prince Edward Island
- 3) Nova Scotia
- 4) New Brunswick
- *all border the Atlantic Ocean
- *also known as the Maritimes - borders on or related to the sea
- *many bays and inlets are on the coasts
- *only contains 5% of Canada's land and 10% of its population
- *great fishing found on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia
- *this is also Canada's poorest area

The Heartland
- *includes 2 provinces
- 1) Quebec
- 2) Ontario
- *this is the core of Canada's population and economic activity
- *Quebec is the largest province by area
- *Toronto and Ottawa are both in Ontario
- *Ontario has very good farmland
- *many locks connect the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence River, and ultimately to the Atlantic Ocean
- *3 different landscapes make up this region
- 1) Canadian Shield
- *poor soil, rich minerals
- 2) Hudson Bay Lowlands
- *few people, swampy area
- 3) St. Lawrence Lowlands
- *good soil and climate
- *60% of Canada's population lives here

The Western Provinces
- *includes 4 provinces
- 1) Alberta
- 2) Manitoba
- 3) Saskatchewan
- 4) British Columbia
- *many wheat fields populate this region
- *major cities include: Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver
- *farming and tourism are the main economic activities
- *recent oil discoveries are also helping

British Columbia
- *Canada's westernmost province
- *most people live near Vancouver
- *Canada's wealthiest province
- *many Canadian's retire here

The Canadian North
- *includes 3 territories
- 1) Yukon Territory
- 2) Northwest Territories
- 3) Nunavut
- *covers 40% of Canada
- *contains less than 1% of Canada's population
- *very barren land
- *many people are natives, called Inuits

Searching For a National Identity
- *two ethnic groups dominate Canada's population
- 1) British
- 2) French
- *many people still have strong ties to their homeland
- *French and English explorers fought over Canada for the fur trade
- *British gained sole control in 1763
- *Canada gained complete independence in 1931
- *many French moved to Quebec
- *some French-Canadians favor seperation and tried to secede in 1995
- *the people voted it down narrowly

- *Canada is rich in natural resources such as fish, minerals, and lumber
- *one of the world's leading mineral producers
- *titanium, zinc, iron ore, gold, coal
- *U.S. and Canada border is the longest undefended border in the world (5000+ miles)
- *travelers must pay customs on goods brought between the countries
- *U.S. and Canada trade often
- *Canada has nationalized health care
