-
A group of similiar cells (& matrix) that work together to perform a specific structural or physiological role in an organ
Tissue
-
Structure that is composed of two or more tissue types
Organ
-
Fibrous proteins and sugars; a clear gel (gound substance, tissue fluid, extracellular fluid-ECF, intestional fluid, or tissue gel
Matrix
-
Stratified squamous epithelium (epidermis) over connective tissue (dermis)
Cutaneous Membrane
-
Lines passageways open to teh external enviroment
Mucous membrane (mucosa)
-
Internal membrane (simple squamous epithelium over areorar connective tissues, covers organs and lines walls of bady cavities, secretes serous fluid
Serous membrane
-
Lines joint cavities (connective tissue layer only; scretes synovial fluid)
Synovial membrane
-
Lines passages that open to the external enviromen (digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive tracts
Consist of two to three layers:
Epithelium
Areolar Connective Tissues
Smooth muscle layer
absorptive, secretory, and protective functions; covered with mucus
Mucous Membrane (Mucosa)
-
Consist of one or more layers of closely adhering cells; only a small amount of intercellular material; no blood vessels, forms the covering and lining of organs and body cavities
Epithelial Tissue
-
Layer between epithelium and underlying connective tissue; anchors the two together; contains collagen, laminin, fabronectin, heparing sulfate
Cannot really see
Basement Membrane
-
Single row of thin cells, permits rapid diffusion or transport; secretes serous fluid
Ex: alveoli, glomeruli, endothelium, serous
Simple Squamous Epithelium
-
Single layer of square or round cells; absorption adn secretion, mucus production and movement
Ex: Liver, thyroid, mammary, salivary glands, bronchioles, and kidney tubules
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
-
Single row tall, narrow cells, oval nuclei in basal half of cells, border microvilla, can be cilated and possess goblet cells
Absorption adn secretion; mucus secretion (ex lining of GI track, uterus, kindey, and uterine tubes
Simple Columnar Epithelium
-
Wineglass-shaped mucus secreting gland cells found in simple columnar and pseudostratified epithelia
Goblet Cells
-
Looks multilayered; all touch basesment membrane; nuclei at several layers, has cilia and goblet cells; secretes adn propels mucus (ex: respiratory tract and male uretha)
Pseudostratified Epithelium
-
Mulitiple cell layers with cells becoming flat and scaley toward surface; resist abrasion; retards water loss through skin; resist penetration by pathogenic organisms
(Ex: epidermis; palms and soles heavily kerantinzed)
Kerantinized Stratified Squamous
-
Same as kerantinzed epithelium without the surface layer of dead cells; resist abrasion and penetration of pathogens (Ex: Tongue, oral mucosa, esophagus and vagina)
Nonkerantinized Stratified Squamous
-
Difference between nonkerantized adn kerantize...
basically protection
