    the first ten amendments to the US Constitution, added in 1791, and consisting of a formal list of citizens' rights and freedoms.
  2. What is the Emancipation Proclamation?
    an executive order issued by Abraham Lincoln on January 1st, 1863, freeing the slaves in all regions in rebellion against the Union.
  3. What was the Compromise of 1850?
    a series of Congressional laws intended to settle the major disagreements between free states and slave states in 1850.
  4. What was the Appomattox Court House?
    the place where Confederate general Robert E. Lee finally surrendered to Union general Ulyssess S. Grant in 1865, ending the Civil War.
  5. What is the 14th Amendment?
    an amendment to the US Constitution that was passed in 1868, which made all people born or naturalized in the US - including former slaves - citizens of the country.
  6. What is the 15th Amendment?
    passed in 1970, this amendment to the US Constitution stated that citizens could not be stopped from voting "on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude".
  7. What is the Battle of Antietam?
    on September 17th, 1862, at Antietam Creek in Maryland, George McClellan's army met Robert E. Lee's army. The resulting of the Battle of Antietam cause the bloodiest day in American history. About 25,000 men died or were wounded. Lee lost nearly one-third of his fighting force and withdrew to Virginia. But McClellan did not pursue and so missed a chance to finish off Lee's army. Lincoln was so angry, he fired McClellan.
  8. What was Freedman's Bureau?
    was established by Lincoln to assist former slaves. This federal agency set up schools and hospitals for African Americans and distributed clothes, food, and fuel. Children and adults flocked to Freedman's schools to learn how to read and write. The Freedman's Bureau also helped reunite many family members who had been separated during slavery.
