Heart

  1. Ventricles
Paired, inferiorly located heart chambers that function as the major blood pumps
  2. Angina pectoris
Severe, suffocating chest pain caused by temporary lack of oxygend supply to heart musce
  3. Aorta
Major systemic artery; arises from the left ventricle of the heart
  4. Artery
Vessel that carries blood away from teh heart
  5. Atria
Paired, superiorly located heart chambers that receive blood returning to the heart
  6. Atrioventricular bundle (AV bundle)
Bundle of cardiac muscle cells that conducts impulses from the AV node to the walls of the right and left ventricles; located in the septum (wall) between the two ventricles of the heart; also called the bundle of His
  7. Atrioventricular node (AV node)
Specialized mass of conducting cells located interatial septum of the heart
  8. Blood pressure
Forced exerted by blood against a unit of area of the blood vessel walls; difference in blood pressure between different areas of the circulation provide the driving force for blood circulation
  9. Cardiac muscle
Muscle tissue of the heart wall
  10. Diastole
Period during which the ventricles or atria of the heart relax
  11. Endocarditis
Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart
  12. Endocardium
The layer that lines the inner surface of the heart wall; consists of endothelium and areolar connective tissue
  13. Heart murmur
Abnormal heart sound (ususally resulting from valve problems)
  14. Intercalated discs
Complex junctions that interconnect muscle cells in the wall of the heart
  15. Mitral valve
The valve on the left side of the heart between the left atrium and left ventricle. Also called the bicuspid valve
  16. Myocardial infarction
Condition characterized by dead tissue areas in the myocardium of the heart; caused by interrupiton of blood supply to the area; also called heart attach.
  17. Myocardium
Layer of the heart wall composed of cardiac muscle
  18. Pericardial cavity
Space between the parietal and visceral layers of the pericardium. Contains a small amout of serous fluid
  19. Pericardium
Double-layered sac that encloses the heart and form its superficial layer
  20. Pulmonary circuit
System of blood vessels that serve gas exchanged in the lungs: the pulmonary ateries, capillaries, and veins
  21. Purkinje fibers
Long rows of modified cardiac muscle cells of the conduction system of the heart; also called subendocardial branches
  22. Semilunar valves
Valves at the base fo the aorta and the pulmonary trunk that prevent blood from returning to the heart ventricles after ventricular contraction
  23. Sinoatrial (SA) node
A collection of specialized cardiac muslce cells in the superior wall of the right atrium; pacemaker of the heart
  24. Sinus
Dilated channel for the passage of blood or lymph
  25. Systemic circuit
System of blood vessels that carries oxygenated blood to the tissues throughout the body
  26. Systole
Peroid during which the ventricles or the atria of the heart contract
  27. Ventricles
Paired, inferior located heart chambers that function as the major blood pumps
